What are bio-identical hormones?

Bio-identical hormones are chemically identical to the hormones our bodies produce. The effects are consistent with our natural biochemistry and the side effects are therefore, minimal. BHRT are obtained from plant sources such as wild yam and soya beans. They are prescribed as compounded preparations, which means they are made for an individual patient by a pharmacist. This gives us flexibility in creating treatment plans fine-tuned to patient’s needs.

Bio-identical hormones are used to restore and maintain optimal health and hormone balance for women and give you relief from a large number of symptoms.

Conventional hormone replacement therapy may also be a suitable alternative and both will be considered and discussed during your consultation. Our aim is to improve the quality of a patient’s life with a personalised treatment plan tailored to their precise needs.

You need to book an initial consultation with our doctors where your concerns, symptoms, goals and possible treatment options (including both bio- identical and conventional HRT) will be discussed.

Your doctor may request a number of blood tests and other examinations such as a pelvic ultrasound scan and mammogram. The doctor needs to see the results of these investigations before they can prescribe you with hormones, therefore, your next appointment will take place in 1-2 weeks after your first.

In the follow up appointment, your doctor will explain the results of your tests. Together, you will discuss the possible treatment options and the doctor will design your personalised treatment plan.

We normally follow up patients after 3 to 6 months. It tends to be more frequent in the first year, however, once we find the perfect hormone combination that balances your hormones and reduces your symptoms, your appointments may reduce to once a year.
